On September 6th, 2022 I along with Brian who delivered Sherry's eulogy attended a ceremony at Newcastle Civic Centre along with many of the other bereaved families who had consented to donate the organs of their loved ones to extend the lives of other people. All families receive The Order of St. John United Kingdom Award for Organ Donation along with a Certificate of Merit acknowledging their gift of life to the recipients of those organs. Chaired by Mrs Lynn Horrocks of the St. John Priory Group for Northumbria in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Newcastle Karen Robinson who presented the awards. We were first addressed by a senior member of St. John's Ambulance, informing us how this award had come about with the approval and consent of the late Queen. Then one of the consultants who we had both met previously at the R.V.I. where Sherry was in the Critical Care ward also addressed us. He informed us that over the last year in our North East Region alone they had received around 1,000 organ donations and that these donations had given the gift of extended life to 3,000 persons. The room was full that evening and what was very noticeable to us both was the many Parents that were present on that evening who had lost a young Son or Daughter, those families made up the majority of those attending. Prior to the event I was very pleased to meet up with Jackie who I had only spoken to previously on the phone, Jackie was one of the nurses present on the Organ Donation Team. She was kind enough to phone me after the organ removal to say that she would now be taking care of Sherry, washing her hair and so on. I have enormous respect and appreciation for all of these medical teams who treat their patients with the utmost care and dignity. So it was an emotional evening for all of us attending, but also for the medical staff who had cared for all of these families. It really impressed on everyone receiving this award just how important this gift of life is for the recipients and as you know Sherry's organs gave the gift of life to three of those 3,000 persons.
